How to Get the Android P Public Beta Right Now
Android P was confirmed to be in the works months ago, and Google allowed app developers to get an early look at Android P. The official public beta was announced at the Google I/O conference recently and is available for download for select devices. In the past, access to the beta tests was restricted to its own devices, but from this release onwards it seems like Google will allow devices from other manufacturers into the Android P Public Beta.
The devices that have been added to the Android P Beta include the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Nokia 7 Plus, Vivo X21, Essential PH-1, Sony Xperia XZ2, Oppo R15 Pro and OnePlus 6. Google’s Pixel lineup of phones is also eligible for the Android P Public Beta. If you happen to own the Pixel, Pixel 2, Pixel XL or Pixel 2 XL you can get the update right away.
If you want to setup Android P on your phone, you need to head to the Android P Public Beta program website.
- Sign in to your Google account. (You need to ensure that you sign in using the same Google account as your eligible Android phone);
- Scroll down and click on ‘View your eligible devices’;
- Click on Enroll next to the phone you want to receive the Beta for;
- Go through the Terms and Conditions and confirm the update;
- Google will send a notification to your phone once the update file for your device is ready. It may take up to 24 hours to happen;
- For Pixel devices, the process is quicker, and you can check for updates once you complete the above steps, and the download should be ready immediately.
It is recommended that you back up your device before updating as it is Beta software and Android P may have unforeseen issues with your apps. Having a backup ready will allow you to switch back to Android Oreo if needed.a
