Barbara Bush, a baby and breaking a shameful silence on AIDS
Barbara Bush Pierce; June 8, 1925 – April 17, 2018) was the wife of George H. W. Bush, who was the 41st President of the United States, and served as First Lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993. She had previously served as Second Lady of the United States from 1981 to 1989. Among her six children are George W. Bush, the 43rd President, and Jeb Bush, the 43rd Governor of Florida.
Most of the accolades pouring in for former first lady Barbara Bush, who died Tuesday at 92, center on her role as the matriarch of a powerful American political family. But a few people in the D.C. area are pointing to an act of grandmotherly humanity as her defining moment
The power of that March 22, 1989, visit to a place known as Grandma’s House was captured by The Post’s Lois Romano.
Mrs. Bush cradled an infant, kissed a toddler and hugged an adult AIDS victim to demonstrate a message: “You can hug and pick up AIDS babies and people who have the HIV virus” without hurting yourself, she said. “There is a need for compassion.”
